McCarthy is an associate professor at the American University of Sharjah, UAE. He has been a teacher for over 30 years, teaching in Turkey, England, Japan, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. His current research focuses on Auto-Peer: an automated feedback system designed to facilitate student writing and student feedback literacy.
